Start researching a local kennel club or obedience schools. Puppy socialization and basic obedience is a must. It is a good idea to start with your puppy anytime between 9 weeks and 12 weeks. Golden retrievers like to please, and will make well adjusted adult dogs if basic obedience and lots of exercise are part of the daily routine.

Start looking for good quality pet food supplier's. High quality nutrition and a balanced diet is essential to enure your puppy does not grow too big too fast. Grocery store varieties with preservatives and dyes are not ideal. When you are ready to take your puppy home, we will supply you with enough food to get you started in the right direction. Once you have selected a veterinarian, review with them their opinion on a good local pet food supplier and which brand is the best for your new puppy.

Start looking for Veterinarians. Ask the opinion of other dog owners in your area, or check with your local kennel club, obedience school, or dog trainer to see who they recommend and why. Once you select a Vet, call the office and inquire who handles emergency services, its good to be prepared in worse case scenario. When you have an emergency its good to know if you will be farmed out to a 24 hour clinic or if your vet handles the emergency calls themselves.

Evaluate your Space. Check your yard for danger. If you live close to a road, consider setting up a fenced in area for you to work with your puppy while it is young, and to act as a exercise area until you are comfortable off leash. Golden retrievers require lots of exercise! Be ready to walk at least 4 times per day or more! Also check the area you plan to expose your dog to, make sure any choking hazards have been removed, puppies love to chew so plan to stock up on safe chew toys and be ready to rescue your favorite pair of shoes!
